Do plant attempts have a chance of improving my steal skill? Also, why plant vs give? Thanks.

Give is already a pre programmed command.

Plant is for giving people items without them *knowing* they have received the item. Think planting false evidence, or planting (possibly fake) documents on somebody.
For practical purposes in AR, this could allow a thief to steal enchanted weapons and replace them with "normal" weapons of their type, e.g. icicles, fiery daggers, etc. without the target noticing. Or they can use envenom to poison food which they hand off to unsuspecting victims (which is more direct than the people who simply drop muffins/slabs of beef/etc. in Seringale from time to time). Or they can hand off stolen goods to somebody else (which gets more complicated if multiple thieves are involved).

Ok, but if someone is blackjacked they don't get the "X gives you" message. Is plant here unnecessary lag?
Thank you for reminding me that thieves don't have to blackjack anyone to steal/plant. :)

Also, since plant gives lag, I assume it's a skill and therefore trainable, but it's not on the skill list... so does practicing plant improve my steal %?

This is something you could just test so the imms can't really answer you.
