New player questions - RP, low level missions, Wild celebr.

Hello, I've been having a blast these days getting to know the game, but I have a bunch of questions that I thought were better for the forum than the Newbie chat, because they were about big topics to discuss or way too specific about specific missions to expect somebody in chat to know about them. Here they go:

1. RP newbie question: what do you do when mechanics and RP don't align? What is more important?

I explain the situation: my character is chaotic good, but due to past circumstances he is very aware that they need to get stronger until they can butt in to beat up evil. He was in Emerald forest and a couple of evils were ranking there, clearly way more level than him, as they were out of PK range and killing mobs with 900 health when he is killing stuff with 500hp. Now, I really felt that my character, even knowing that he would be dead if these evils were to attack him, would have said something. However, I did not want to put these two evils into the weird RP situation where "a good character is running his mouth, demanding us to stop, and our character woudl beat him up, but we are not able to due to PK restrictions". I did the next best thing and my character went to try to find somebody to help, but by the time he foud someone close, the evils had stop ranking there. What should I have done in this situation? I am very new to RP so I don't want to annoy other people by throwing them into a discussion they do not want to have or where I feel I am taking advantage of mechanics.

2. Ranger-specific questions. What skills should my character focus on once he reaches lvl 25 to stop gaining exp and train with scarecrows?

So far I was making him practice once every skill because I don't know how valuable practice sessions are, I know you can later convert them into trains so it seems quite valuable if you are expecting to die a lot and want to recover your constitution (if I understood how constitution loss works). I was trying to ask this question IC to a ranger but I play at times where there is not a lot of people on, so it has been hard.

3. Random low level mission questions - Feel free to give me clues of things that I missed or tell me if there is a command I am missing.

3.1 - Is there any way to stop the jeweler at Seringale to stop giving me the ring mission and Tir giving me the "Discover purple potions" mission? Whenever I toss the ring or sell it the jeweler gives it to me again, and Tir always gives the pot mission to me when I see him, which is very annoying because it stuffs my quest list and I cannot abandon it, no matter how many times I complete it.

3.2 - What's with the quest about caging rabbits in the farm near Timaran? The cage is not a container, so you cannot put the rabbits inside, I tried dropping it and killing the rabbits, but more come and no rabbit enters the cage. You cannot hold, wear or wield the cage, and you cannot grab the rabbits. What am I missing?

3.3 - At the Dragon Sea, the mission about finding the buried treasure - I know where the treasure is, but I've tried digging with a spade, cutting the tree, attacking it, smashing it, nothing works. What command am I missing?

3.4 - I got a mission about killing elves at Sylvan Vale by rescuing the Miden'nir goblin, but the elves are Lightwalkers. Am I correct in assuming I stumbled upon a neutral/evil mission I can only complete with this character going against his ethos? Unfortunately, it cannot be abandoned. Is that quest going to stay there for eternity now?

3.5 - As part of the Pub crawl quest I have to steal Whizzleteaks prized possession at the Towers of Sorcery. I think I know what the possession is, but am I correct in assuming I would need a thief to help me complete this quest? Or is there a way that as a Ranger I can steal from people?

3.6 - Where is the entrance of the cellar in the Cabin of John in the Mystic Forest? I tried going in there with detect invis. on and examined everything and could not find it.

4. Can us low-levels also attend the Wild celebration event? Where will it be?

I noticed the announcement just mentioned a tavern, and I think it's the one at Seringale due to logs, but there are many other taverns, so just wanted to make sure.

That's it. I know a lot of these questions are most likely due to the fact I have never played a MUD and don't know what the game or other players are expecting of me, but hopefully some of you can guide me around these questions! Thank you all.[size=13]

Hello there, I will try and give you some helpful answers one question at a time.

1. The first thing you have to look at is pk range. If they aren't in pk range, you can talk to them but you would probably have your agenda of getting stronger/training/gearing, etc. As a chaotic good, you wouldn't just attack a group of evils that were ranking an area, that's usually suicide.

2. Usually people 1 prac if they are looking for a competitive edge at 50 for pk. It allows you to get extra hp at 50 but not a lot. As a newer player you are likely to have an easier time just practicing as close to 75 as you can get, IE you would never waste a practice to only get a few points. Most all of your skills have some use or other, and it's up to you how you want to focus them.

3. There is a way to permanently remove quests, but some are set as dailies and are meant to be repeatable. The command to permanently remove a quest is Deactivate #. Once deactivated it will never come back.

3.2 Not sure about the rabbit quest, I haven't done that one in a very long time.

3.3 That's a fun quest, but I probably wouldn't do it unless you really want to. I won't tell you why cause spoilers.

3.4 That must be a bug, you don't kill lightwalkers as a lightwalker. Submit a bug for that one.

3.5 Haven't done that one.

3.6 It's the fireplace.

4. Just show up two hours early for this Friday night's surge and it will be at mockers tavern.

Also have you been to our discord? That's a great place to ask questions like this and get a faster answer sometimes.

Hey there!

I feel I am qualified to answer at least some of the questions. I played a wereRaknos ranger in the Warlords actively for about a year who made it into the Halls of Exalted so I think I know a thing or two about rangers heh heh.

I'll go with the questions you asked in the order you asked them.

1. Personally, I feel RP *always* matters. Perhaps I am extreme, but for a while I wouldn't even PK another player unless I was able to give an excuse I felt was reasonable should the Immortals ask me "Why did you PK this player?".

1 cont. In this specific situation, I would've left the area. There's nothing you could've done without them being in PK range, and general etiquette here (social norms, etc.) is to not interfere with other people ranking if you're out of range (there are also people who have deliberately gone into areas to interfere with others ranking in the past and not left, but it's a dick move at the very least).

2. The first thing to focus on is your defenses. Parry, dual parry, shield block, dodge. Use scarecrows from the Juggernaut in Seringale and go to Gnome Village. Get the hobgoblin soldiers to start attacking you by removing all your equipment and putting your arrows away then wielding your bow (and make sure to put your light back on if you need it). You won't deal much damage without arrows in your bow, and without equipment you'll deal less damage than usual. Flee once you've gotten the soldiers after you (you may have to flee multiple times to get back to the main portion of the underground area). Go to the location with the hobgoblin king and drop a scarecrow kit then immediately attack the scarecrow so the hobgoblins will be attacking you but you won't kill them.

To master shield block, simply wear a shield and do not wield any weapon. This means you won't parry any attacks and shield blocking will go up faster.

(I suppose you've probably practiced dodge at this point, which is generally recommended to be mastered last and to not even be practiced until you've finished your other defenses since you can't use equipment to focus on it specifically. Oh well, now you know!)

To master dual parry, wield a flail and dual wield a dagger to maximize your chances of parrying with your offhand weapon (flails are a foreign weapon for you so you won't parry effectively with one, and daggers are the best dual parry weapon available). I recommend mastering dual parry before parry.

To master parry, wield any weapon besides a bow (a staff is best for this). It is best not to wear a shield at the same time (and to focus on one defense at a time if possible).

Aerial shot, wounding shot, and retreat (all bow skills) are all worth training. Aerial shot can be trained on the owls in Armageddon Sanctuary or the mosquitoes and vultures in the Mountain Trail. Wounding shot can be used as an initiation move on any opponent - I'd recommend Elemental Canyon for training it as it is full of weak opponents which you can kill quickly after firing a wounding shot (the important thing is to get the attacks in). Retreat requires a pet of some sort or a mercenary - the ranger pets are good for this. Falcon comes from manual beast call, opponents in PK range showing up in your area, or occasionally they arrive when you land an aerial shot. Wolf comes when you shout a warcry. Boar comes when you butcher a corpse in the wilderness (make sure to have autosac turned off). Panther and bear are the other two pets which only come in circumstances involving PK and I don't believe they are available at level 25 anyway.

3.1. Not sure - can somebody else explain?

3.2. You have to CATCH the rabbits I believe. Try some command like that. CATCH, GRAB, or whatever. I'll have to review.

3.3. Have you freed the slave yet? You have to do a number of other things first before you can get the treasure.

3.4. That is an evil only quest yes. Submit a bug in game if you can; I'm sure Davairus or one of our other Immortals will help you with the questor problem.

3.5. I haven't gotten that far in the new Pub Crawl quest so I can't help you.

3.6. The room north of Mary (inside the cabin) is the room above the cellar. I believe you must have your light removed for part of the quest because otherwise you cannot complete it.

4. I think the event is in Mocker's Tavern, which is south, south, west of North Square. But I haven't paid especially close attention to the specifics of the event.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you so much to both of you! Some follow-ups:

I am glad to know that I kinda followed the etiquette just by thinking about it. I have seen one of the characters since and now we are in PK range, so I guess I have no excuse now though!

Blackwidow, "catch" did work, thank you. Also, thank you so much for the training guide! I know as a new player maybe I shouldn't focus on minmaxing stats, but I really want to learn everthing with this character, so I want him to have a fair chance against any player in PK range.

The treasure quest (spoilers for the quest, skip if you wanna do it by yourself): I did free the slaves, and I have the key. I really just need to know how to activate the tree or get the treasure from under the tree with the X marked on it. I tried opening it, smashing it, digging on the floor, digging the tree, nothing works.

Unfortunately Dogran, deactivate does not work on quests that say "You cannot abandon this quest", so we are still in the same conundrum as before! I also sent the bug report to Dav.

I also finally got to the cellar of the cabin, so thank you both for your help on this one and on my other questions. I can't wait for today's event!

If you type in help quest, it brings up a whole pile of information on quests, what's relevant for you is this:

questor
'QUESTOR'
Syntax: questor
Syntax: questor complete
Syntax: track <quest#>
Syntax: deactivate <quest#>
Syntax: abandon <quest#>

If you're using the web cllient you'll see your quests numbered. Instead of deactivating your quest, you should abandon it, a la abandon 1 and it should work.

abandon 1
You abandoned your quest, Test Your Might! (Seringale)

That way you should be able to start it over again. Don't remember if I've tried deactivating a quest or not. Hope that helps!

That's great. Thing about pk is, some of us are 'Try Hards' and we know the map like the back of our hands and no amount of prep is enough unless you have equal knowledge and are prepared. There are instances where that is not true of course.

As for whether or not you 'should' attempt to pk someone is totally up to you. You could be roleplaying someone who doesn't get involved unless certain conditions are met, you could be a pacifist, or you could hate all evil and want to eradicate them. It's up to you to choose how your character develops, and there is no harm in any one solution. I definitely don't recommend picking fights until you are prepared though, enough of them will come to you no matter what you do, and you can be full looted when killed. Some people are mean like that.
