Shield Type Benefits

I had an idea and was wondering if it already occurs in some form. But I think it could be cool to create some different subtle mechanics for different types of shields. The thought would be something like having different size classes for shields that favor certain fighting styles. The first draft idea is:
1. Small shields (e.g., bucklers) - lowest chance to shield block, slight boost to hitroll (able to attack from more angles), increased riposte chance for warriors.
2. Medium shields (e.g., kite shields) - pretty much shields as they stand now.
3. Large shields (e.g., tower shields) - highest chance to shield block, slight penalty to hitroll (less angles to attack from), lower riposte chance for warriors.
Just an off-the-cuff idea, I wonder if y'all think it has any merit.
